Getting better?

It seems the social bit is getting better, yesterday we had our neighbours over and ended up having lunch together so it turned into a full day full of games, play and chatting. Lovely!

Exciting times ahead

When you start working with Emirates they give you an aircraft fleet that you will remain on, its either Boeing (only one type of aircraft, 777)  or Airbus (a total of three aircraft types 330,340 or 380). If you get Airbus you will start on the 330, the smallest aircraft Emirates have got and then move on to 340 and also 380. As both the 330 and 340 are going to be phased out there have been lots of speculations and it seems the fleet has been "frozen" until all the 340´s are gone. Even though R said he would have loved to have flown another aircraft he has never been sure if it was the best thing to go on the 340 career wise, its not that straightforward. On the one hand, on the 340 it seems they will have more layoves than on the 330 and for some that is something positive although for us it has been good that R was home almost every day (at least morning OR evening). On the other hand it could have been better to go direclty onto the 380 and start buliding up your hours for future command. As there wasnt an obvious better option we decided not to worry if R would get the transfer or not, we are happy as things are too. Today he got the email calling him for A340 conversion and he feels it will be exciting and then of course so do I!

Social day

Today has been a very social day. Started with my normal wednesday "b´fast" with the swedish girls, this time in Springs. Always lovely to meet up! Left straight from there to go for J at nursery to go home for the double playdate we had planned. A´s best friend and his sister came over but also a swedish friend and her two kids. The kids had a blast  but I get so tired when im this busy so even though its not even 10 pm I think Im going to call it a day.

Booster seat

I get so annoyed, why cant things be straightforward? Dont know if I mentioned it before but when I was going to change A´s carseat from rear-facing to forward-facing I did a whole lot of re-search to find out what is best and safest. Horn appeared to be a must to keep the seatbelt in the right position so I bought a Britax Kid Plus. We have been very happy with it, both in Sweden and in Malta but here its not stable in our car. A keeps tipping sideways and since we are going to turn J forward-facing this summer and need a new booster seat for Sweden I thought about trying to find a two new ones for here, that fit better in our car and bring the old one to Sweden. Its hard to know what could work so I contacted a swedish salesperson that helped me before and is very helpful and knowledgeable. He explained that Kid Plus is a bit top heavy so he could see that it would get a bit unstable if the angle of the seat in the car is not correct. He recommended Britax Adventure and Maxi Cosi Fero. I realised that both these carseats didnt have horns so I asked about this (had read from another manufacturer (BeSafe) that it was better and safer without horns as you would decrease the risk of clipping incorrectly. The answer I got was this (freely translated) "I like products without horn, but then they should have other details to direct the seatbelt properly, which Britax Adventure and Maxi Cosis Fero has. BeSafe have the right argument but problably the wrong product, theirs is very wide, too wide in our opinion". As A has shown interest in clipping himself in but its a bit hard with the horns I thought it would be a good idea to try without horns so I was deciding between Adventure and Fero. I picked Fero, partly because it looks better but also it has a built in function where you can "attach" the booster seat to the headrest of the car so it wont topple over. R was going to try to get them from the UK if he gets a flight he requested in May but the other day I had to change my mind. An independet testing magazine had tested carseats and found that some had chemicals in them, Maxi Cosis Fero is one of them! :O Feeling really annoyed, why shouldnt we be able to trust that products, especially for children, are safe? I dont know if Adventure is safe from the chemical point of view but Kid plus was safe from a chemical point of view so I guess I just have to hope and belive that Britax is on the right track with all their carseats. I just can not justify spending money on something that I KNOW is full of chemicals so now I have to re-think and am really left without an option, I will have to get the Britax Adventure.

Spelling

Apart from reading A also learns how to spell at school. Yesterday was the last day of the easter holidays and I was trying to excite the kids a bit telling them tomorrow its school time and how much fun it was going to be. A replied "N-O, no!" J was quick to jump in and said "N-O, yes!" :D

Liver doctor

Last wednesday I went to see my "new" liver doctor for the third time since we moved here. The doctor that was recommended to R moved back to his home country just as we moved here so I had to start looking for someone else. For some reason I had thought it important to see a european doctor and the selection was not big. When I found a german doctor I decided to go with him. I cant say I ever felt really good about him (if you can ever feel good about your doctor), he speaks eeery slowly with this crazy german accent and that makes him hard to understand. I have also been to see him "for nothing" twice as he didnt have any testresults. I take my bloodtests at Emirates clinic and they are then supposed to fax over the results to him at Healthbay but apparently it doesnt work very well. In jan when we went we didnt know about the problems they seem to have with Emirates clinic results but this time around I had learnt my lesson and emailed the gastro nurse to check if they had received the results before I made my appointment but still it turned out that they didnt have all the results, only a few. Im quite sure the fault is with Emirates clinic and not Healthbay but still, the nurse should have checked with the doctor before she adviced me to go ahead and book my appointment. My first appointment was a disaster when we were not sure if it was on a sunday or a monday and I called on sunday morning to confirm they told me that "yes your appointment is today" and when I got there they told me that my appointment is not until tomorrow! In the end they did arrange so I could see the doctor but with hubby and kids there the 1½ hr wait was like hell. Healthbay is also on the "wrong" side of town plus they dont have direct billing with Emirates which means that two years after joining and my AIH will be covered by the insurance we will have to pay for my visits and wait to be refunded the money "later on" and that would be ok for a 355 dhs (74 eur/60 gbp/97 usd, wow what a broad spectrum of english readers I have!) every three months but the doctor is talking about slowly reducing the medicine and phasing it out and finishing off with a biopsy and that will not be cheap so that would be a lot of money to fork out while waiting for the refund.

All those things are fairly small if you see them seperately but alltogether it becomes quite a big issue so I think I should at least try to find another doctor that both R and I can trust and that work at a clinic with direct billing!

Today we had a semi planned playdate at our house. Had invited a friend in the morning and one in the afternoon but in the end both decided to come in the afternoon so it turned into a busy day. The kids play well together and it was a lovely afternoon.

Minibreak

Yesterday we returned from our mini vacation. We had a great time, the hotel was lovely with lots of good food and had they had a room for us we would have stayed at least one more night. The kids spent the whole days in the water (pool or ocean) and now both me and R feel exhausted and in need of a holiday ;) The first evening I was the first one to fall asleep! I have so many pictures to share that I will try to split it up a bit.

Otherwise life goes on, yesterday afternoon J's friend came over to play, this morning we went to play with our carpooling friends and in the afternoon a quick visit to a swedish friend before we had to leave to go see my liver doctor. I think Im looking forward to school to start as much as the kids :P

Ice skating

You could think it sounds crazy but there are a couple of places here in the desert where you can actually ice skate. The kids have been telling me they want me to teach them and today we went with some friends to try it out. I have to say that it went better than I expected. R, having only been on skates twice in his life, did his best holding on to the barrier with one hand and trying to help a child with the other while I helped the other child (I managed without holding on to the barrier though!) I thought the kids would get angry and stubborn as usual when they didnt manage but they were really brave and kept trying for a whole hour AND they say they want to go back again. I think its great and look forward to taking them again.

Best buy

Yesterday we finally found a 12 inch bike with backpedal break on Dubizzle (second hand). J was not totally happy as it was not pink but the excitement over having a proper bike took over and she said she accepted it. On the first try it looked like this

And today she rode her bike to Spinneys and back! I have to say the balance bike was the best buy we could have made, the transition was so easy!

Easter eggs

Since R had a flight to Malta on Easter sunday and could go to Candynavia to buy swedish pick and mix I told a little white lie to the kids and said that the Easter Rooster (as in Sweden we say its a rooster laying the eggs, not a bunny. Here is a link to last years easter egg hunt) would be a bit later to arrive in Dubai as he has to pass all of Sweden AND then find his way to Dubai. Kids were a bit hesitant and asked to go for easter egg hunt on sunday (normally they dont know what exact day things are supposed to be done so I guess the had been told from school) but on Tursday when R was back from Malta they found this in our back yard. A was so excited his whole face turned red :D

SIL

The other evening I was up chatting and webshopping with R´s brothers wife that is pregnant and due by the end of may. Exciting, of course and lots of fun so I ended up staying up longer than I should have and wrote this on my FB status "has been up waaay too late, babyshopping is too much fun :)" R´s sister has had problems with her pregnancies with lots of miscarriages and they have been checked and she got some sort of diagnos, something related to the blood and they are up to now without children. I dont remember the time perspective but a day or so later his sister had something like this on her FB status "even your own family sometimes hurt you". Of course I got concerned and wrote to her on skype to see if everything is ok and I got this reply.

"Hi, sorry for the comment that i wrote. Thanks God you have 2 lovely children and J is having one and for me none. Sometimes i am very depressed (not sometimes always) about the situation that i am in.Don't want to aruge with you but when i saw your comment I got more depressed. Sorry I know that you did't mean anything to hurt my feelings but for me it's an other dagger in my heart . I can't be happy each time someone tells me the she is having a baby. I can't be happy each time someone tells me its a girl or a boy. Once again sorry."

Seriously I think she overreacts, I can understand that its a tough time for her and that she wants to have a baby BUT that doesnt mean that I have to stop living MY life and enjoying my kids and their first cousin on the way. If I had tagged her in my fb status it would have been a whole different case, but to "accuse" me of hurting her just cause I said something that was babyrelated doesnt feel fair. She writes herself that she knows that I didnt mean to hurt her. Wouldnt it have been enough for her status to be something on the lines that life is touch sometimes or something like that and not that familymembers hurt you?

Discussed this with a friend on skype and her very wise words were these:

"of course its a crappy situation for her but you cant expect others to feel the same as you do. she could choose to stop living, but unfortunately she cant make the rest of the world feel her misery all the time. You ar always alone in your life crisis, that´s part of life. people die every day but the world doesnt stop anyway.

I think "all the time" are the keywords here. Of course we feel for them and think about their situation and even if we dont understand exactly how they feel we understand that its really hard for them when "everyone" have children or are expecting. For the same reason do we normally think carefully what words we use when they are around but I couldnt be expected to tip toe around them even when they are not in the same room just cause they have their troubles? I totally understand that its a sensitive subject but I think that if you cant handle ANYTHING babyrelated you have to cut yourself from society instead of thinking that everyone is out to get you with their every comment. What do you think?

How hard can it be to fall asleep in an empty bed? Im a pro when it comes to avoiding going to bed when R is away and the bed is emply.....normally the soloution is to get one or both of the kids. They come every night anyway, get really happy when I tell them they can come if they want and I can sleep.

In-laws

So now the in-laws are here. They arrived late tuesday night and have been here for 3 days now. They have had time to shop secret presents for R´s brother and sister, visited both kids schools, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall/Dancing Fountain, IKEA, Spice and gold souk,  an hour around the Creek in an Abra (traditional Dubai wooden boat), and Dubai Marina. Busy busy busy! Tomorrow R has his flight to Malta and will be away for two days, not feeling too good about that, have no idea what to do with them during this time. We´ll see what we can come up with, R has to help me make some plans today. Hopefully I will survive. Yesterday after a FULL day together I felt totally unsocial and went to be already at 8 pm, I just didnt have any more energy left. I have learnt that its really tiring spending so much time with people that are not "your own". As usual I will be back with photos as soon as I have had time to upload them :)

Orcas

Inspired by Frozen Planet and the Orcas (as I wrote about the other day) we dug out our honeymoon dvd and enjoyed the footage. There are plenty of "killerwhale safaris" if you google it but we picked the one called "Orca Tysfjord". Watching the film we foud out that we were actually there on the 10th of november, exactly one year before A was born! I have to say it was an icredible experience, one which I hope I will get to re-live again at some point in my life, preferably with the kids. Thought I would share some pictures (taken with a bad digicam) with you all, enjoy!

On the second day we went out with the Zodiacs, the best way to experience the Orcas if you ask me

We were really lucky and here (if you look very carefully) you can see the orcas hunting fish, the fish trying to jump to get away

Some brave guys snorkelled with the Orcas

Orca Tysfjord

The happy honeymooners!

When I had a look arond the website Im very sad to say it seems that the herring are not passing the fjord to the same extent anymore and therefore there are less Orcas around and they are harder to find. The safaris only run during the weekends too so it seems things are changing so it seems I wont be able to take the kids for this lovely experience :(

Bread vs Muffin

Today we had some friends over and J saw me taking muffins out of the freezer. At the same time I was baking some bread (with lots of seeds) for the b´fast tomorrow and she asked me what it was. I showed her the loaf and told her I was baking bread. "I want muffin" was her reply to that :)
